Member of the Week: Lucile Stengel Mazzoleni

March 5, 2015

It’s been an eventful week! We had a great live crowdfunding session with YTFN and a photo exhibition at London School of Economics last week. Of course, none of which would have been successful without our dedicated volunteers and this week, we are featuring Lucile Stengel Mazzoleni, our social media strategist! (a LSE alumni too! Go LSE!)

Here’s Lucile’s story of joining Lensational:

‘Lensational stood out for me because it connects a wide audience to the daily lives of women we wouldn’t hear about. I really believe empowerment starts with giving disadvantaged people the possibility to share their story. With Lensational, we are not only helping women to make their own life choices, but we are also challenging gendered assumptions on a daily basis. We are showing the real lives of real women, and hoping to convince our public that equality matters’
Thank you so much Lucile! It’s been great working together to plan social media strategies and interacting with other women organizations! Your article sharing about women issues are so inspiring too! (I can go on…)

Wanna join our group of active volunteers and advocate women empowerment? Email us at info@lensational.org to become a volunteer. Also stay tuned for our International Women’s Day activities!

Member of the week: Umair Jamal

February 26, 2015

Happy Thursday every one! It’s almost to the weekend and we hope that you are having a great week so far. Our member of the week is Umair Jamal, who is a dedicated member on our Pakistan Programme Team. Let’s see what he thinks about Lensational:

Lensational speaks to me because of its distinctive character: highlighting women issues through camera lens, where each picture taken has a life and story in it. It doesn’t just accentuate various women issues from the underdeveloped world; rather it empowers them by giving them an opportunity to record their stories and others around them. This is astounding; and this is what fascinates me.
Thank you so much Umair! Are you inspired by the initiative? Want to join our volunteering team? Email us at info@lensational.org to start today! We are also doing a live crowd-funding event in London on March 3rd, 2015. Be sure to check that out too!

We are proud to introduce the new initiative: member of the week! We will introduce our diverse faces to dear supporters and show you why we love volunteering at Lensational! Our first member of the week is Patricia Shyr, our Marketing Manager and here’s her self-reflection:

“As far as the vision of Lensational is concerned, I am firmly convinced that economic empowerment and freedom of expression are two essential keys for women to unlock the door of inequality. I have a dream, which is making the world a better and equal place to live. Lensational provides me the platform to devote myself to realizing my dream. ”

Winner of Hivos Social Innovation Award

February 8, 2015

On 5 February 2015, Lensational was announced as the winner in the Hivos Social Innovation Award in Amsterdam. Bonnie, our co-founder and Director, had the honour to receive the award from Manuela Monteiro, former Director of Hivos, who advocates for the need for humanist values in international development. The prize consists of a € 5,000 prize and a coaching trajectory worth € 10,000 to develop the idea into a prototype.

Hivos Social Innovation Award is a one-of-a-kind competition organised by Hivos, a Dutch international development organisation that has reached 22.2 million in 26 countries. The competition kicked off on 15 October 2014. By the end of the submission round, Hivos received nearly 400 innovations from 61 countries, out of which 20 semi-finalists were selected based on more than 150,000 votes and Hivos’ own selection. The semi-finalists participated in the Hivos Learning Community to share knowledge, learn from international speakers and work in groups to complete their submissions for the finals. After a jury selection, six of the semi-finalists were invited to Amsterdam.

The finalists stayed in Amsterdam for three days:

Day 1: coach training from Beth Susanne, seasoned international pitch coach
Day 2: meeting with jury, including Manuela Monteiro, Valerie Frissen and Sam Gichuru; visit to Vandejong
Day 3: visit to Kennisland and Award Ceremony
Thanks to Hivos and Kennisland, the three days have been extremely fruitful for us to take the ventures to the next level. Lensational was also able to learn from other finalists, coming from Sri Lanka, Uganada, Malawi, Bangladesh, Indonesia, and build friendships that will last beyond the competition.

Stay tuned to our website for updates on our collaboration with Hivos!

Exhibition
Jiwa/ Kaluluwa/ Soul/ 心靈

January 31, 2015

Lensational’s 2015 pop-up exhibition “Jiwa/Kaluluwa/Soul/心靈” is here now! Featuring film photographs taken by our all-time wonderful Indonesian & Filipino domestic helpers about their unique journey in Hong Kong.

Since our first show back in October 2013, we have always wanted to make a creative statement about women empowerment. This second exhibition pays tribute to our dearest domestic helpers/ Lensational students who have joined our photo-education workshops for over 3 months. We will be touring around Hong Kong, at places you can never imagine! (Maybe even outside Hong Kong, who knows!)

1st stop (19-23 Jan): Yasumoto International Academic Park at CUHK

2nd stop (26-30 Jan): Cheng Yu Tung Building at CUHK

(We will be updating the list as the date gets closer.. Stay tuned!)

What is Jiwa? Or Kaluluwa?

Jiwa and Kaluluwa mean one same thing – “soul” in Bahasa/ Tagalog. Something intangible but critical that drives Filipino/ Indonesian women to be who they are, what they do as foreign domestic workers in Hong Kong. This exhibition documents how domestic helpers move out of their comfort zones over the course of their employment in Hong Kong, slowly but progressively.

What is the significance of photography in this exhibition?

Photography is used as an analogy to describe this particular state of mind for all those who are in transition. While lost in uncertainty, people tend to be easily affected by noise around them, and they lack the time and luxury of quietly listening to their own hearts. This exhibition serves the purpose of reminding everyone not to merely focus on results, but to treasure the transition of uncertainty and celebrate the journey of change.

What camera did the Lensational photographers use?

To effectively replicate core elements of change, progression and transition, our photo- education process with the domestic helpers involves the use of Holga cameras. Holga is a medium format 120-film camera, proudly made in Hong Kong and known for its low-fidelity aesthetic. Unlike digital cameras, where we can easily view or delete photos, photos taken with Holga can only be viewed after developing and printing films. Meaning of the photography process with Simon Wan, our Lensational guest photographer – Every time when a shutter is clicked, it signifies uncertainty.

Special thanks to our partners & sponsor

Many kudos to our partners who supported Lensational all the way: Holga, Fair Employment Agency, Tck Learning Centre, We Care 融之家. Last but not least, our amazing exhibition sponsor: LSnP, a new energetic and artsy haircare brand in Hong Kong.

We need your feedback as part of the Hivos Social Innovation Award!

December 4, 2014

Dear Friends of Lensational,

Thanks to your support, Lensational is one of the 20 global semi-finalists at the Hivos Social Innovation Award. The crowd voting phase saw 145,000 votes from all over the world and we were the top 7th project to be chosen. As part of the online coaching by Kennisland, our first assignment is to get feedback from our supporters on our theory of change.

1. For which problem is your initiative a solution? What does it aspire to achieve?
The women across the world still face massive challenges to access quality education, secure economic independence and make their own decisions freely. In many societies exclusions from non-agricultural paid work plus wage differentials and discrimination in labor market have placed women in a disadvantaged position with regards to financial security. For women engaging in paid work, their contribution and commitment to care work are often undervalued. Such undervaluation due to social stereotypical expectations to gender roles would impart emotional burden to women and could further lead to social isolation.

Lensational ‘s mission is to tackle gender development disparity and stereotypes towards women that exists in the developing countries. We believe that creating secure economic independence for women is the right step in achieving the equality, enabling inclusion in the society and having the right to have and determine choices for themselves.

2. What is the core of the idea? What makes it stand out, special?
Photography as a means of gaining extra income serves as a flexible method to cope with the outcome of exclusion such as economic dependence. Economic opportunities for women will provide independence and status for women in the society. Teaching women photography provides a meaningful approach to engage women themselves in transnational feminism, hence build networks of trust intra-nationally and inter-nationally, and address structural constraints to gender justice by scaling out collective action. Photography, as also a therapeutic recreation, aids women in psychological health and self- efficacy.

Photography is a universal language that overcomes illiteracy, as well as a powerful medium to raise awareness of gender issues. However the photography world is dominated by white men who often portray Asian women as powerless victims. We want to give every women an equal voice through photography . “A picture is worth a thousand words.” Women who are traditionally silenced, are denied chance to express emotions. We believe that women feel less fearful and inhibited to start a conversation using the creative and powerful impact of photographs. Women’s emotions and thoughts can be easily expressed through a press of shutter, regardless the restriction of illiteracy.

3. Who could benefit from your initiative? Do you know your target audience? Will your initiative connect to their needs?
Women at the base of pyramid can benefit from our initiative, and our impact has spillover effects to other groups, particularly their children. All that is required is access to a camera and a creative eye to showcase the life around them.

Although we aim at empowering women and girls, we have realized the indispensability of engaging men and boys. In terms of age, Lensational’s photography projects in Pakistan have showed that targeting public school boys and girls around 13 is the most appropriate. 13 onwards is the critical years of value formation. Targeting public schools can also allow us to reach out to their parents, especially women who are housewives.

Our initiative connects to the foremost need of an individual to express. In societies where women’s voices are crushed, photos enable creative liberation and a therapeutic recreation. Our team comes from a wide range of background but we all have experience working with marginalised women in the developing world.

Please comment here if you have any thoughts! We look forward to hearing from you.

All our best,
Team Lensational

Celebrating the crowdfunding success on #GivingTuesday

December 2, 2014

Here is our press release on our crowdfunding success, set to transform lives of 60 Pakistani women through photography:

Lensational, a social enterprise aiming to empower underprivileged women in developing Asia through photography, has reached its crowdfunding goal of £2,000 today on HelpingB, the first crowdfunding platform helping young changemakers bring their social impact ideas to life. £2,000 will equip 60 Pakistani women and their families in Pakistan with digital cameras and photography training. Not only will they be able to express themselves despite illiteracy, photography will also give them new sources of income.

Given the new impetus gathered around the global solidarity movement after Malala Yousafzai winning the Nobel Peace Prize, we believe that this is the right moment to launch an ambitious project in Pakistan – giving the women permanent access to digital cameras. With 22 days remaining in the campaign, Lensational has successfully raised the seed capital it needs for the project.

In September 2013, Bonnie Chiu, co-founder and Director of Lensational, travelled to Pakistan on her own to conduct photography workshops when she was still 20 years old. In Pakistan, she partnered with the Citizens’ Commission for Human Development, AIESEC Pakistan, Leadership College Network, Executive Lions Club as well as Lahore University of Management Sciences and National College of Arts, to conduct photography workshops. Bonnie believes that, “Photography is a powerful medium that transcends geographical borders and gender stereotypes, and is a universal language in itself.”

The link to the crowdfunding campaign is: http://bit.ly/lensationalcrowdfund. For further information, you may get in touch with us on info@lensational.org, or call Bonnie Chiu, at+447472 267221. To connect with us on social media, you may visit our website, Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.

More on Lensational: We have empowered 150 women in Hong Kong, Myanmar, Pakistan, the US and the UK; results were shared with 800 visitors to our exhibitions in Hong Kong, New York and London. We have won prizes in several international social venture competitions, including the Resolution Project Social Venture Challenge in Australia in March 2013, the Social Venture Challenge Asia in South Korea in December 2013, and the McKinsey Venture Academy in the UK in May 2014. We have also been interviewed by radio, TV and print media in all the above countries as well as Australia and Indonesia. The driving force of Lensational is young people united by a passion for shaping our future today. Founded in March 2013, it has quickly grown to a team of 30 students and young working professionals of more than 15 nationalities, with average age of 23 years.
